Champions League Betting Markets – What Can I Bet on?

This is where the fun begins. As soon as you open the Champions League page on any of our recommended bookies you will find a massive amount of options. But, don’t be put off by this if you’re a new punter. More markets mean more opportunities to find the bet you’re looking for.

Most bookies will have a dedicated area on their site for the markets, and this will apply to both pre-match and live betting. On top of day of the event options, there will be ante-post odds up too. We’ll break these markets down for you so you can understand the differences and see where you could find value.

How to Bet on the Champions League

Betting on the Champions League can be tricky as you need to consider countless different angles. Will a team be holding out for a draw, is a team focussing more on their domestic league etc. these are questions you have to ask when deciding who to side with. Furthermore, there are tons of markets to pick from both pre-match and live betting Champions League Ante-post markets

Let’s start with the ante-post odds. These will be priced up well in advance which means you could get your hands on a ridiculously good price. In saying that, because there are so many unknowns – it’s difficult to get right. Here is a list of the most common ante-post markets you’ll come across:

  • Tournament Winner
  • Top Goalscorer
  • Winning Nation
  • Group Winner
  • To Qualify from Group
  • To Reach Final
  • Stage of Elimination

Tournament winner

This is self-explanatory. You’ll be able to bet on which side you think will win the trophy. Favourites tend to have reasonably short odds but if you get on early enough, there is value to be had. Rarely does a team that is not in the top three of the betting before the season kicks-off goes on to win, so we would recommend going with one of the front runners.

Champions League Top Goalscorer Markets

This is usually more open than the outright winner’s market. Players can score a ton of goals in the group stage and be crowned the top scorer without progressing to later game weeks. Therefore, if you fancy a player to net a lot of goals, it might be worth a punt. Some bookies may even offer an each-way option in which your player could finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd so, keep an eye out for those.

Winning Nation

Not as popular as many of the other markets we’ll discuss. This is because the odds will be relatively low If you go for the likes of Spain. In saying that, you could get a bargain on an outside nation like France with PSG in with a chance of winning.

Group Winner/To Qualify from group

For these markets, you need to wait for the groups to be decided first. We’ll go through that in detail lower down. Both could offer value, especially if the favourites haven’t been at their best. We particularly like the ‘to qualify’ as a wild card can often sneak through.

To Reach Final/Stage of Elimination

These markets will be priced up usually after the draw for the group stages is complete. Because you will then have an idea of the route a team may need to take. Although an interesting pick, we’re not convinced it offers much value, especially early on. With so much uncertainty about which sides could meet, we prefer other market options.

Champions League Match Bets

Now for match-day bets. You can of course back a lot of different markets for particular matches be it a group stage match, or a knock-out round game. Different approaches should be taken from a betting point of view with a tactical approach likely employed by coaches. Especially in the two-legged knock-out rounds, sides may not go for a victory.

  • Match Winner
  • Correct Score
  • Both Teams to Score
  • Over / Under Goals
  • First Goalscorer
  • Asian Handicap
  • Double Chance
  • Both teams to score

We won’t go through all the variations of markets as there are so many. Instead, we’ve picked out the betting markets we find the most interesting to review. In saying that, don’t be afraid to try something new as the more unique markets also offer value to punters.

Champions League Match Winner – 1X2 Markets

During the group stages, you may think that backing the favourite is the way to go. However, shock results have been known to happen. This could be for a number of reasons; the underdog wants it more the favourites field a weaker side or simply just luck. For that reason, take a closer look at odds and form before making a pick.

The knock-out stages also offer interesting scenarios. For example, Manchester United may want to settle for a draw in the first leg away to Barcelona. Therefore, they would have a slight advantage heading into their home game. Many angles need to be looked at which makes betting on the Champions League all the more fun.

The knock-out stages also open up other markets with extra-time and penalties coming into play so keep an eye out for those.

Both Teams to Score (BTTS)

This is a hugely popular market and one that fits nicely in accumulator bets. BTTS odds are usually around the 4/5 (1.8) mark making the odds relatively short but packed with value. There are only two options either both teams find the net, or they don’t. We’re big fans of these and would suggest giving these serious considerations for your next Champions League bet.

Over/Under

You’ll see this type of bet tipped up quite a lot because there are plenty of options with it. You’re backing over or under a certain number of goals in a game and you’ll get decent odds by doing so. These can be particularly appealing in mismatch games with giants taking on unknowns in the group stages. Over 4.5 goals, for example, could offer monster odds and may be worth popping in an accumulator.

Bet with Paddy Power on the Champions League – Excellent Offers

Paddy Power are a football-focused bookie that provides genuinely high odds compared to others on the tournament with a wide variety of markets to match. Furthermore, we’ve also found there to be enhanced odds on the day of matches including individual boosts as well as enhanced accas. It’s worth having a run through the promotions section prior to placing your bet.

Live Betting on the Champions League

A growing trend in betting is that of live betting or in-play. It’s a different kettle of fish to betting pre-match as the odds are ever-changing. If a team is in attack then bookies need to adjust several markets including goal scorers, correct scores and more! Because of that, there is a good chance you could sneak some value if you think that a team is building momentum.

If you’re interested in this type of betting, we’ve put together a dedicated page covering out top in-play sites. Find out more about those here.

Champions League Fixture Schedule Including Qualifying Rounds

So, we’ve looked at the markets you may want to look at on betting, but how is the tournament set-up? It’s a good question, and one you should have a basic understanding of before looking at markets.

Qualifying: This begins in mid-June with clubs from low co-efficient countries. There is a preliminary round followed by three qualifying rounds played over two-legs. Other clubs with higher standings are added in each qualifying round.

Play-Off: Once a side has successfully won their third qualifying round tie – they enter the play-offs. At this stage, a win means a coveted place in the Champions’ League group stage so well-known teams feature. For example, the team that finishes fourth in the English Premier League join at this time. Sides that fail to win will drop into the Europa League.

Group Stage: There are six match days with each Champions League group as all four sides play each other home and away. The top two sides of each group will progress to the Round of 16.

Knock-out phase: Teams that finish top of their group will play against the side that finishes second in another group in the round of 16. There is a clear path from here on who can meet who with winners progressing through to the quarterfinals, semi-finals and eventually the final.

The Champions’ League Group Stage Draw Format

The group stage draw is when the fate of teams is decided, and very much influences how the tournament may play out. Thirty-two sides are put into four pots depending on their coefficient. It’s also important to note that sides from the same association (ie La Liga) can’t be drawn together at this stage.

Here is how each pot looks:

  1. The Champions League and Europa League winners, along with champions of the top six associations
  2. The next eight teams with the highest club coefficient
  3. And then the next eight teams with the highest club coefficient
  4. The last eight remaining teams

Eight groups are then drawn with one team from each pot.
