His big sad voice, his beautifully yearning, perfectly arranged songs why Richard Hawley isn't number one everywhere in the world all the time is quite beyond us. How Mercury Music Prize winner Dave avoided same fate as brother behind bars - thanks to mum David Orobosa Omoregie, who is best known as Dave, took his mum on stage with his as he collected his. The Mercury Music Prize is an annual prize that awards the best music album from a UK artist. Currently known as Hyundai Mercury Prize due to sponsorship reasons, it is quite a prestigious award which recognizes artistic achievements across a wide range of genres. The albums that qualify for The Prize must have a digital release date spanning between July of the previous year and the current July.

First awarded in 1992, the Mercury Prize is going strong nearly 30 years later. There are no categories for the Prize. Twelve of the best UK musical albums from the current years enter a shortlist with only one winner to be announced. The winning album can come from any genre or artist as long the panel of judges deem it of the highest quality.

The panel’s decision is based solely on quality rather than a genre or artist. This means that all the entries on the list have an equal chance to win the prestigious prize. Every year, the panel of judges receive over 200 UK albums from emerging artists and music stars. The decision to cut this number down to 12 is surely hard since the UK is famous for producing top artists.

Since its beginning in 1992, The Prize doesn’t take part in any PR events. The focus is exclusively on the quality of the artists and music – anything that might influence the decision is avoided. Over the years, big names such as Pulp, Portishead, PJ Harvey, Francis Ferdinand, and Arctic Monkeys have won the prize coming from different musical backgrounds.

PJ Harvey leads the list in terms of prizes with 2, while the legendary Radiohead have appeared on the shortlist a record 5 times. Interestingly enough, nor Radiohead or their lead singer Thom Yorke (1 nomination as a solo act) have never won The Prize.

The last band to win the prestigious Prize is Wolf Alice. A four-piece alt-rock band hailing from London, Wolf Alice surprised top favourites such as Florence + the Machine and Arctic Monkeys to claim The Prize. The critically acclaimed Visions of a Life album and The Prize have launched Wolf Alice into the stratosphere, bringing them recognition from major music start.

The Prize definitely has a major influence on a band or artist’s career. Due to this, it is considered a major career achievement, with a number of winning artists often having successful careers later.

Mercury Prize 2019 Betting and Odds Preview

The Mercury Prize or simply known as The Prize is an annual music prize which awards the best UK album. Launched back in 1992, the Prize is a highly prestigious award and an equivalent to the Turner Prize in art. Each year, over 200 artists enter the competition, with only 12 albums making the shortlist. Out of those 12, only one will claim The Prize selected solely on the quality of the music on the record.

The Mercury Prize started in 1992 as the Mercury Music Prize. Primal Scream won the first Album of the Year award for their third album Screamadelica. With each year, The Prize grew in popularity, with almost all emerging and well-known artists submitting their releases. And, although high-profile names have won the competition numerous times, there have been quite a few emerging artists winning more recently.

When it comes to the selection process, the best album of the year is selected by a panel of judges. They base their decision solely on the quality of the album and take no part in any PR events that might favour one artist or another. It has always been about quality when it comes to The Prize and it’s definitely for the best.

The best 2010 album by a UK artist will be revealed on September 19 this year. Apart from getting the media attention it rightfully deserves, The Prize also draws the attention of many punters. Every year, betting sites offer quality odds on the contenders, with thousands of punters not missing the chance to place a bet on their favourites.

It’s no different this year. Some bookies have already provided the list of favourites for The Prize and we expect more to join the fray as the event draws nearby.

The list of nominees was selected by an independent judging panel and revealed at a Launch event, hosted by BBC Music’s Huw Stephens on 25 July 2019. The same list was announced by Tom Ravenscroft on the Mary Anne Hobbs’ show on BBC Radio 6 Music.

Ladbrokes

There’s really no introduction needed when it comes to Ladbrokes. One of the most successful bookies in the UK, Ladbrokes has thousands of fans who consider it home. There are around 40 sports and events in the bookie’s offer paired up with industry-leading odds and enticing markets. Add the exclusive promotions to the mix and you’ll see why Ladbrokes is so popular among UK punters.

Besides the sports in its offer, Ladbrokes offers odds on a number of other events including the Mercury Prize. Currently, David Orobosa Omoregie, simply known as Dave, is the hot favourite for The Prize at 3/1. Considered a main favourite for a while now, slowthai is second on the list at Ladbrokes with odds of 6/1. Idles and Self Esteem are right behind with 10/1 and 12/1 respectively, while James Blake is in the middle of the list available at 20/1. Olly Murs is the biggest outsider this year with odds of 100/1.

We strongly agree with Ladbrokes’ list when it comes to the main favourite. Dave has released a stunning album (Psychodrama) which has propelled him to the top, so he is our favourite as well. slowthai is not too far behind, though – if you like to punt with a bit of a risk, go for him.

SportNation

SportNation is the successor of the bookmaker Bet on Brazil, as it saw a revamp in August 2017, but no longer has Alan Brazil as the brand ambassador. SportNation has a professional look, live-betting options and a wide variety of betting options. It is important to mention that the bookmaker holds a gaming license from the much respected UK Gambling Commission.

slowthai’s Nothing Great About Britain is the favourite with odds of 5/2, Dave with ‘Psychodrama’ is also at the front of odds with 3/1.

RedZoneSports

Although RedZoneSports is primarily focused on American sports betting, most UK sports can be bet on by the UK punters. RedZoneSports also has a sleak, red, black and white design, and a respectable UK license.

Mercury Prize Betting is accessible as well, with Slowthai being the most popular one with 5/2. Dave is the runner-up holding 3/1 on Psychodrama, while the third is Idles with odds of 7/2 for ‘Joy as an Act of Resistance’.

Fun88

Fun88 is maybe known for football betting and being the sponsor of Newcastle United FC, not to mention that Kobe Bryant is their brand ambassador, but they offer odds for this year’s Mercury Prize Betting as well. As the previous mentioned bookmakers, Fun88 also holds a licence from the UKGC.

Slowthai is a sure favourite with odds of 5/2, while there are some strong contenders like Idles with odds of 7/2 or Fontaines DC with 8/1, but Black Midi also holds 8/1.
